money thank you for joining us a public memorial service for late u.s. senator john mccain is underway at the national cathedral in washington d.c. a vietnam veteran mccain died last week aged eighty one after battling brain cancer among those in attendance a former president barack obama and george w. bush president donald trump who had a bit to feud with mccain was not invited to attend. our correspondent alexandra phenomena is outside washington national cathedral where that service is being held and right here in studio with me is tyson from the aspen institute here in germany thank you both for joining us here right so alexandra i'd like to begin with you we obviously did hear that the former president george w. bush and obama delivered eulogies what was the highlight for you of both of their
6:02 pm
tributes. well i have to say that what we saw here today was a very moving ceremony a world scripted one that once again showed john mccain most of my art and respected by many here and especially those two who delivered as you said former president george w. bush and former president obama we heard from bush he praised john mccain for his courage and decency he said that he was very often frustrated by the senator and what he had to say but at the same time he made him a better man so it was a very porous powerful. we also heard as you said from president obama. when he was asked by john mccain to speak here today he was sad and surprised a little bit because he's he was his political rival in the two thousand general
6:03 pm
election but he of course thought that it would be to speak here today and then he joked seeing that john mccain is no probably laughing that both his political rivals bush and obama are speaking very talking telling very nice things about john mccain but president former president obama's speech was also sort of political when he said that john mccain fought against a habit of bending the truth because it. tarm the u.s. democracy when he said that john mccain championed the three a free and independent press it could be. in direct criticism of president who is known for not telling the truth all the time and who regularly attacks press and journalism all right alexandra obviously john mccain's daughter
6:04 pm
also delivered a very passionate address and i'd like to have a listen to just a little bit of what she had to say the america of john mccain is generous and welcoming and bald she is resourceful confident secure. she meets her responsibilities she speaks quietly because she is strong america does not boast because she has no need to you the america john mccain has no need to be made great again because america was always great. thank you. all right so alexandra do you think that that was a message to president. yes of course i think that we can understand this passage of her speech of her attributes as
6:05 pm
a message to president because it's of course his slogan to make america great again so we can understand what mccain said as a criticism of president however we also have to say that what she had to say here in the national cathedral were very emotional and personal things she shared her memories with people attending this funeral thing that she would like to reveal what her what john mccain or who john mccain really was say a soldier a war hero but for her it was her. right i'd like to bring in now in studio so we've had lots of tributes for mccain in the last days but he obviously did have his critics right i mean from both sides of the aisle and that's kind of the the brand that he set out he was the maverick he was the guy who cut a swath down the middle sometimes unpredictable as president obama said and this is a guy who you know from the left you know was a supporter of the iraq war was
6:06 pm
a supporter of a strong military presence the u.s. in the world so that kind of upset the left sometimes he even said that there should be a fence built on the border in two thousand and ten that upset many in the left but on the right he had a lot of critics as well you know his support for immigration reform is support for campaign finance reform and even his vote last year he's decisive vote to preserve obamacare which was a big priority for president bush you know left a lot of criticism on the right most first and foremost president trump do you have the opportunity to be in the same room with him during a time at the u.s. state department what impression did he leave on what he was a passionate man a passionate advocate for us role in the world u.s. leadership principled leadership you know the meetings that i had with him whether be preparing to come to the munich security conference or a nato summit you know this was a guy who like to get out the map and really talk about. the nitty gritty details of what was going on when i was at the state department you know one of the big issues was ukraine and russia russia's presence in ukraine and you know this is
6:07 pm
a guy who really cared deeply about ukraine's future and so there was no country in the world no matter how far away from the united states or how remote that wasn't seen to him as a front in that struggle to widen the circle of democracies right so i like to come back to you finally we've had a lot of high profile voices giving us their opinions of this man but what do average americans remember mccain for. many people told me they think he was a role war hero that's what do you hear when you ask them about john mccain that he was a memory that he was someone who fought for what he believed in and that this country is going to miss you miss him and that his posse marks an end of an era. phenomenon our correspondent outside washington national cathedral and right here in studio with me tyson baka from the aspen institute in germany thank you both

party and the bigoted maidment what's happening in the main is that they were expecting to go on a march through the city that's been prevented while police are trying to establish the route that they were intending to go on will be secure there are of course the number of the counter demonstrators are currently blocking their route but these protesters say that they want to do is they want to march in mourning for the man who lost his life on saturday night early sunday morning and also to remember what they say the victims of i don't gentiles and then merkel's migration policy of course the task now for police is trying to ensure that they and the counter-demonstrators are kept separate so they don't want to see or a piece of a lot of the violence that we saw on monday night. and sounds like the city of chemist's is very divided have you had a chance to speak to any of the demonstrators then one of the hoping to achieve at the end of this evening. a lot of the people here in this protest have been
6:11 pm
keen to point out that they don't want to be linked to a lot of the violence that we saw on monday night there were reports in fact that some people were performing at the mosque at the nazi salutes the people that we've spoken to here say that it's not what they're about that they are not here for violence they are here as concerned citizens people who are they say legitimate concerns about refugee policy in the influx of migrants into this community on the other side though we spoke to counter protesters who wanted to tell us that they want to paint a very different picture of chemists they don't just want images of violence and what they say are racist racist views going around the world they say that this is a place where refugees where migrants are also welcome and. said that chemist's is bracing itself is upon us prepared for they venture of potential violence.
6:12 pm
up until now it's largely been peaceful there have been reports that there were some stones thrown from some of the counts of protesters what happens in the coming hours is still uncertain people here are starting to get a lot more agitated that they're not able to there is the concern as well that they will start to come into contact with concrete that's in fact it looks like something is just starting now people in front of me are running change in the next few minutes all right child. unfortunately that's all we have time for but we'll definitely be checking back with you thank you. football now and falls have continued their surprisingly strong start to the season in the second round of bundesliga games the wharves won three one and for their second straight win often time be try a book and women struck late to down frankfurt to one the rest of the games played so far what draws including ones still made
